As Israel approaches the national memorial day commemorating the 1995 murder of Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin, the Gesher Organization asked Israelis what event caused the greatest rift in society.

The Rabin assassination came in second, while Ariel Sharon's destruction of the Jewish communities in Gush Katif came in first.
Inside the Gesher dialogue tent, Rabin Square, 1995.

The politically-charged killing of Jews by Jews on the Altalena ship in 1948 ranked third (3.6%).

The survey was conducted for Gesher by the professional polling company Motagim, which polled 528 Hebrew-speaking, Jewish Israeli adults constituting a representative cross-section of the population.

The public sectors that are most hated, according to the survey, are the hareidi-religious sector (37%), the Russian immigrants (15.2%), and the Jews of Judea, Samaria and Gaza (Yesha) (12.6%).
The day of dialogue brings together Israelis of all walks of life.

When asked which sector of the public contributes most to Israeli society, the Jews of Yesha came in second with 16.2% of the vote, while Israelis on Kibbutzim came in first (20.1%). Next were Israelis from Tel Aviv (11.9%) and then Russian immigrants (11.7%).

Which entity is most at fault for social tensions in Israel? The respondents hold accountable first and foremost the politicians (42.1%) and then the media (39.4%). 9.2% blamed the rabbinical leadership.

The Gesher organization is dedicated to bridging the gap between different segments of the population in Israel. Executive Director Shoshana Becker says the results of the survey are a red flag. "The political leadership must be concerned with the polarization in Israeli society which is evident in the survey's results," she said. "The Israeli public sees the political leadership most accountable for the hatred."

Rabin was assassinated on the 12th of the Hebrew month Cheshvan (November 4, 1995) and this year's official memorial day is moved up to Thursday since the Hebrew date falls close to the Sabbath. The amateur "Kempler Video" of the assassination was first made available to internet viewers last year, a full ten years after the murder.

Gesher will hold a day of dialogue on Wednesday in Tel Aviv's Rabin Square. The event targets youth, university students, soldiers, officers, and the general population who will participate in discussion tents and lectures by political leaders, Rabbis, and academics.
